The Kiribati National Shipping Line Limited (KNSL) was officially established in April 2018, succeeding its predecessor, the Kiribati Shipping Services Limited (KSSL). KSSL, in turn, was founded as a State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) on July 9, 1990, under the 1979 Companies Ordinance and Articles of Association. This marked the evolution of national shipping services that originated from the Kiribati Shipping Corporation (KSC), which operated with significant government subsidies from 1978 to 1989.
For nearly three decades (1990–2017), KSSL served as the primary shipping provider in Kiribati, facilitating essential inter-island transport and connectivity. However, over time, the entry of private shipping operators began to reshape the industry landscape. Despite these changes, KSSL remained a cornerstone of maritime services, setting the stage for its transformation into KNSL.
The establishment of KNSL in 2018 marked a pivotal moment in the company’s history, ushering in a new era of financial growth and operational independence. Among its significant achievements, 2024 stands out as a landmark year for the organization. During this year, KNSL successfully procured its first self-funded fast ferry, the FF Tobwaiko. This milestone not only demonstrated the company’s progress but also solidified its position as a leading SOE under the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Transport (MICT). The purchase of FF Tobwaiko represents a monumental step, making KNSL the first SOE in Kiribati to acquire a vessel entirely from its own financial resources.
KNSL’s journey reflects its dedication to enhancing maritime services for the people of Kiribati while driving innovation and self-sufficiency in the shipping industry. The company’s progress continues to underscore its critical role in the nation’s development and connectivity.
